Why JTC Are the Crane Repair Experts

Julie Marshall / 31st March 2025 / Crane Repairs

At JT Cranes, we pride ourselves on providing expert mini crane repair services, tackling everything from minor wear and tear to extensive accident damage. Here, we’ll walk you through our full repair process, highlight the challenges we’ve overcome and demonstrate why our technical expertise and commitment to quality make us the go-to team for crane repairs.

From Initial Inspection to Final Testing

When a crane arrives at our facility, the first step is a full evaluation.  This allows us to identify both the reported issue and any underlying problems the customer may not be aware of.  We then compile a detailed report outlining the required repairs and estimated costs, which we discuss and agree upon with the customer.

Once approved, the repair process begins:

  • Troubleshooting: We systematically diagnose the fault, setting the crane up to replicate the reported issue. We methodically eliminate possible causes until the root problem is identified.
  • Strip-Down: To access the internal components, we disassemble the necessary parts.
  • Parts Ordering & Replacement: We source and fit the required replacement parts, whether they are structural parts, pipework, or intricate mechanical components.
  • Rebuild & Function Check: The crane is carefully rebuilt, and we carry out a full function check to ensure all systems are working properly before handing it back to the customer.

For straightforward issues, repairs can be completed in a day.  However, complex accident damage or extensive mechanical failures may take weeks, depending on lead time of parts required.

Challenging Repairs: The SPX532 Mountain Mishap Recovery

One of the most demanding repairs we’ve tackled involved the SPX532 mini crane. The machine had been flown by helicopter to the top of a mountain for a job, but upon its return, it suffered a mishap.

As it was lowered, it toppled over and was dragged along the ground, sustaining both cosmetic and internal damage.

Initial Condition

The crane arrived in a sorry state. The parts were heavily dented and scratched, the outriggers were damaged, and the pipework was in disarray. Internally, the oil had leaked into areas it shouldn’t have, posing a significant risk of further damage.

Repair Process

We systematically stripped the crane down, uncovering hidden internal damage caused by the tipping incident. Oil contamination was a major challenge, as running the machine with oil in the wrong places could have caused severe engine damage. We replaced the damaged parts, slew ring, and pipework, restoring the crane to its original condition.

Our Technical Expertise

Experience Overcomes Challenges

At JTC, our strength lies in our extensive technical expertise and hands-on experience. While some companies struggle to obtain manufacturer support, especially for older crane models, our team’s in-depth knowledge allows us to troubleshoot and repair even the most challenging faults.

Custom Solutions

In the early days of crane repair, we innovated by designing special tools for Demag boom stripping, streamlining the process. This problem-solving mindset continues to drive our repair capabilities today.

Why our Customers Keep Coming Back

We offer an open-door policy throughout the repair process, encouraging customers to visit without appointments to check on their crane’s progress.  We also provide remote updates via Microsoft Teams or other platforms, ensuring clear communication at every stage.

We have a loyal customer base that trusts us for both repairs and ongoing maintenance. For example:

  • GM Lifting turned to us for a leg rotation encoder replacement when their regular supplier quoted an extended lead time. We had the part in stock and swiftly completed the repair, allowing the crane to return to service without delay.
  • Fountain Foods brought their second-hand crane to us for an initial health check and operator familiarisation. Since then, they’ve returned for all repair and maintenance needs, including recent track replacements.

Why Choose JTC for Mini Crane Repairs?
