How Far Can a Mini Crane Reach? Understanding Boom Types and Lift Radius

Julie Marshall / 10th March 2026 / All, Contract Lift, Crane Hire, Crane Repairs, Test Weights

Mini cranes are chosen for precision, access and flexibility, but one of the most common questions we’re asked is simple: how far can a mini crane actually reach?

The answer depends on more than just the size of the crane. Reach is influenced by boom type, lift radius and site conditions. Understanding these elements helps you select the right equipment confidently and safely.

What determines mini crane reach?

When discussing mini crane reach, we are really talking about two key factors: boom length and lift radius.

The boom is the crane’s working arm. Some mini cranes use telescopic booms that extend in sections, allowing compact transport dimensions with impressive vertical and horizontal reach once extended.

Lift radius is the horizontal distance from the centre of the crane to the load. This is where things become important. The further away the load is from the crane, the lower the lifting capacity becomes. Even a small increase in radius can significantly affect what the crane can safely lift.

How far can a mini crane reach in real terms?

Most mini cranes can achieve vertical reaches of between 10 and 25 metres depending on the model, with horizontal outreach varying accordingly. However, maximum reach does not automatically mean maximum lifting power.

For example, a mini crane working at close radius may comfortably lift several tonnes. At full extension, that same crane may only be able to lift a fraction of that weight. This is why understanding both reach and capacity together is essential when planning a lift.

Access also plays a major role. Mini cranes are often selected for projects with restricted access, internal installations or sensitive environments where larger machines cannot operate. In these situations, choosing a crane based purely on headline reach figures can lead to problems if ground conditions, stabiliser spread or obstructions are not considered.

Choosing the right crane for your project

At JT Cranes, we no longer sell new cranes, but we provide expert support through our Crane Hire services helping clients select the right equipment for each lift. For longer-term projects, our Contract Hire solutions provide a complete lifting package with operator and planning support included.

Our team works closely with clients to assess site constraints, required lift radius and load weight before recommending the most suitable equipment. Because we understand crane capability in detail, we ensure that you are not simply choosing a crane based on maximum boom length but selecting equipment that will operate safely and efficiently on your site.

We also provide Test Weights Hire to ensure lifting equipment is certified and operating correctly, alongside specialist Crane Repairs and servicing to keep equipment performing at its best.

If you are unsure how far a mini crane needs to reach for your project, speak to our team via our Contact page. We are known for being helpful, practical and straightforward, and we are always happy to guide you through the options.
