When it comes to lifting in tight, tricky or otherwise challenging conditions, mini cranes often play a crucial but often unrecognised role in construction. But choosing the right one for your project can mean the difference between a smooth lift and a logistical headache. Here’s what to consider when it comes choosing the right mini crane.
Mini cranes come in all shapes and sizes – in our case, anything from a 600kg mini picker right up to a 15,500kg articulated truck-loader. So how do you work out what capacity you need?
Start with the basics – what weight are you lifting and at what radius? If you throw in any access challenges or headroom restrictions, we’ll have a good idea of the best option pretty quickly. But honestly, you’d be better off spending your money on a site visit and a contract lift. Our experienced team often spots a simpler, more cost-effective way of doing things that wouldn’t be obvious on paper.
One common mistake? People often forget about the lifting tackle. It takes up space and adds weight, both of which matter – especially when you’re working in tight environments with limited headroom.
Mini cranes are often called in when regular cranes can’t do the job – think tricky access, limited height or unstable ground. Sometimes customers don’t plan for them as much as they would a full-sized crane.
Usually, the biggest issues are about getting in and out and whether the ground can support the crane safely. What’s our advice? Don’t guess. We can assess things based on site plans, CAD drawings or photos but nothing beats a site visit by someone who knows what they’re looking at.
For indoor work or enclosed spaces, our battery-powered range is the obvious choice. Quiet, zero-emission and compact – they’re purpose-built for those environments.
When it comes to features like remote control, tracked movement or emissions-free operation, the best choice really depends on the job. One size definitely doesn’t fit all.
That said, sometimes a very specific model is the only one that will do. Case in point: on a recent tunnel project, we deployed the JF365 – a compact powerhouse with a clever rigger design and surprising capacity. It ticked all the boxes for a demanding, space-limited environment.
To get the most accurate recommendation, it’s best give to give much information as you can. That means weight, radius, access issues and any other quirks of your site.
But don’t worry if you’re not sure what you need – whoever picks up the phone when you call us is experienced in mini cranes. For simple jobs, that might be all you need. For more complex ones, we’re known for finding solutions that others couldn’t. We often turn things around when everyone thinks it can’t be done and we’re going to keep doing that.
